Speed Dating Guidelines/Description

Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process whose purpose is to encourage people to meet a large number of new people. Guys and girls will rotate to meet each other for a series of short 3 minute "dates" to interact and get to know each other. At the end of the event each participant will fill out a form to be handed to the organizers stating any of the guys or girls whom you have interest in for a follow up date. We the organizers will compile the forms and contact any particpants where there is mutual interest and leave it up to you to take the next step.

Please note that there is no commitment required for a follow up date and that throughout the event you are not allowed to ask for or exchange phone numbers/contact details. The short time frame of each date protects participants from being stuck with any mismatches (but of course all of our participants will be well groomed eligible candidates!).

The evening reached its climax with a lively Q & A session. Guests were treated to a dinner-cum-networking session after the seminar. A member of the audience walked away with a Nokia E61 in the lucky draw that brought the event to a successful conclusion.

How one person can make a difference

"My contribution (to the NUS MBA Program)… reflects my zeal in shaping the program." - Nikhil Kochhar, 27, winner of the 2006 NUS MBA Alumni Leadership Award

This year’s winner of the NUS MBA Alumni Leadership award is Nikhil Kochhar, president of the NUS MBA Club (2004-2006). NUS Business Leads reproduced excerpts of his acceptance speech here:

NUS Business School has established its presence all over Asia as one of the best business schools in the region. As the MBA program breaches the Financial Times 100 rankings, the next few years are critical in shaping the future of the MBA program, especially in terms of its perception in the Western world. A good MBA program is known not only for the modules it offers but the role it plays in shaping the personality of its students. A lot depends on how the program utilizes the time of the students in the best possible manner and ensuring that the learning goes hand-in-hand with having fun. As a person who strongly believes in work-play balance, I decided to play an active role in the School’s MBA Club activities when I got accepted into the NUS MBA program.

The NUS MBA program is diverse in terms of the nationalities of its cohort and its course electives. It is an advantage NUS has over other schools; however it is also a challenge to carry out programs that reflect the interests of everyone in the batch. During my tenure as the president of the MBA Club, I have tried to ensure that every activity undertaken by the club benefits everyone and takes the NUS MBA a few steps forward in terms of content and structure.

There are three critical areas of the MBA Program in NUS. They are program developm-ent, student activities, and career services and my efforts have been focused on changes and improvements in these three key areas.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: I helped shape the NUS MBA program in several ways. For example, when the options and futures module was cancelled, I fought for it to be reinstated, even if it was not a credit course. as finance students felt it was important.
I also introduced Saturday classes for the part-time students so that they have greater flexibility. There was also a need for courses in the summer, and that is on track now through the introduction of two summer sessions.

The exchange program is one of the highlights of the MBA program and the recent increase in the number of exchange schools was due partly to the feedback I gathered from students.

I was also instrumental in introducing the School’s first-ever week-long orientation program for first-year MBA’s in 2005. The orientation was a huge success in terms of team-building within the cohort.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: In an MBA program, life outside the classroom is as important as life within and I have always tried to contribute by not only being part of various activities but also by being instrumental in organizing the events. Events like Cerebration for example. For me, organizing these activities was a challenge as their success depended a lot on the level of participation from the cohort. Through my leadership skills, I have been able to bring the different MBA batches together and organize memorable events for everyone.

CAREER SERVICE is one of the most important areas of an MBA program as the success of it determines the growth and popularity of the program. One of the initiatives that I have been involved with is the three cocktail evenings organized to give students the opportunity to interact with industry leaders and better their chances in the job arena. Through my resources and networking abilities, I managed to persuade GE Money to offer internship opportunities for our students, and am in the process of getting cable tv news station, CNBC to do the same.

My contribution in the above areas reflects my zeal in shaping the NUS MBA Program. My communication and people skills have helped me fulfill this desire and make a difference in the past two years of MBA life at NUS. Besides the tangibles that are visible to all, I feel that one of my main contributions has been in making sure that I am accessible to all at any given point of time and that all are helped in every possible way.
